This two-tiered jubako features a traditional tame-nuri lacquer finish.
Tame-nuri is a traditional lacquer technique in which a translucent reddish lacquer (shu-ai urushi) is applied over a vermilion base.
The resulting color is neither pure red nor black, but a deep, subtly brownish tone with great depth. One of its distinctive characteristics is that the color gradually changes and matures with years of use.
This two-tiered jubako is finished in roiro lacquer, giving the surface a smooth, mirror-like gloss.
The maki-e decoration is “Matsukui-zuru” (Crane with Pine Twig) by artist Minoru Obata.
The piece also incorporates raden, a technique in which fragments of mother-of-pearl are delicately inlaid.
Perfect not only for serving osechi during the New Year celebrations, but also for presenting hors d’oeuvres and dishes for everyday use.
