The theme of this bag is “a bag crafted by artisans, for artisans.” It features not only a refined design but also outstanding functionality, including multiple organizing pockets for tools and shock-absorbing padding on the bottom. Its signature detail is the brass German-style fastener at the opening.
The name Smith Bag comes from the fact that, in old England, blacksmiths were commonly referred to as “smiths.” The name is currently pending trademark registration. That said, this bag is not only for craftsmen—it's perfectly suitable for everyday use as well. Whenever we work, each of us becomes a kind of craftsman, drawing from our own skills and knowledge. We chose this name in the hope that everyone can feel like the “artisan protagonist” of their own work.
Materials
The canvas used for both the exterior and lining is paraffin-waxed canvas with water-repellent properties. It repels water, stands upright due to its rigidity, and is made from a single piece of fabric with no bottom seam, providing excellent strength. Although the canvas initially has crisp wrinkles, it softens gradually as you use it.
Even the sewing thread was chosen for its vintage texture.
The exterior canvas comes in navy. The lining is beige for all models. The leather is Italian vegetable-tanned leather (camel). The handle is a luxurious 3.5mm-thick single leather piece, and the opening is also finished with Italian leather piping. Despite its thickness, the handle is flexible. You can choose either a short version for hand-carrying or a long version suitable for shoulder carry.
The metal fastener at the opening is a brass one-touch hook originally used for the soft tops of high-end German convertible cars. It locks with a firm “click” to prevent the bag from opening, and releases when the knob is pulled forward. Its size makes it easy to grip even while wearing gloves. Inside the opening, a double ring is included for attaching keys.
The leather handle is fixed with brass rivets commonly used on jeans.
Functionality
The standout feature is its generous number of pockets. For efficient organization, the front of the bag has seven pockets, plus a 500ml bottle holder and a key holder. The back side features three slits where you can store items such as a laptop or glasses.
The bottom has approximately 10mm of cushioning sewn invisibly between the outer and inner fabrics to protect the contents from impact.
About the Canvas Wrinkles
The wrinkles in the canvas are due to the paraffin-wax processing. Paraffin processing involves melting wax into the canvas using heat, giving it water repellency and a firm structure. When rubbed, it can leave white marks (“chalk marks”), which may appear on the product you receive. As the bag is used, the paraffin naturally ages and the fabric softens and develops character. If the chalk marks bother you, you can reduce their visibility by ironing—with a pressing cloth always placed on top.
