This No. 3 panel artwork, “Owl” by Tsunehiro Azuma, is finished using the distinctive chinkin (gold inlay carving) technique unique to Wajima lacquerware.
The surface is meticulously carved with numerous fine, delicate lines, allowing viewers who look closely to fully appreciate the artisan’s exceptional skill. Depending on the direction of the light and the viewing angle, the expression of the owl subtly changes—at times appearing as if it is gently blinking. The result is a charming and soft impression, full of warmth and quiet character.
In Japan, the owl is regarded as an auspicious creature, traditionally believed to bring good fortune. As this artwork depicts a pair of owls, it is considered especially auspicious, symbolizing harmony and added good luck.
Size (No. 3 panel):
Approximately 42 cm (H) × 35.5 cm (W), including the frame.
Please note:
- Slight variations in size may occur.
- Each chinkin pattern is hand-carved individually by a master artisan, and minor differences in fine lines and details are to be expected.
