The Shami Lantern is a portable lamp born from the skin-stretching techniques of traditional shamisen craftsmen.

Taking advantage of the unique properties of rawhide—which becomes flexible when wet and hardens as it dries—the shade is formed by carefully stretching the material over a wooden mold. The subtle wrinkles, shaped entirely by hand, give the light a soft and distinctive character.

For brightness control, the lantern incorporates a traditional shamisen tuning peg. Turn the knob to hear a satisfying click as the light turns on, then continue turning to adjust the brightness to your preferred level. The peg also functions as a handle, allowing the lantern to be carried wherever you wish.

Rawhide that cannot be used for shamisen construction is given a new purpose: transmitting light. Transforming sound into illumination, the Shami Lantern is a unique expression of traditional craftsmanship reimagined for modern living.
