This handcrafted doll portrays a Yobidashi, one of the indispensable backstage professionals who uphold the world of sumo.

While the spotlight shines on the wrestlers, a Yobidashi works tirelessly to prepare and maintain everything that allows each bout to unfold with dignity.
Their duties range from calling out ring names with a distinctive chant, to handling sponsorship banners, and even constructing the dohyo — the sacred earthen ring — for grand tournaments and traveling events across Japan.

The doll wears Tattsuke-bakama, practical work trousers with divided legs that allow for agile movement.
Particular attention has been given to the koshi-ita (the back plate of the hakama) and the structure beneath: the obi belt and detailed folds are recreated by referencing authentic sumo attire. These garments reflect the Yobidashi’s readiness to move swiftly, rhythmically, and respectfully in service of the sport.

Two versions are available, symbolizing the two sides of every sumo match:

·       East, holding wooden clappers used to keep time and signal readiness

·       West, holding a folding fan used in ceremonial calls

Through this figure, the unseen traditions of sumo — its rituals, craftsmanship, and devoted supporters — come vividly to life.
