A bold exploration of the creative potential of Kimekomi. This rhinoceros, a large piece in the anima series, is handcrafted from tosso (paulownia wood powder and glue) and gofun (oyster shell pigment) — the same natural materials used in traditional Japanese crafts.
The fabrics used for the Kimekomi technique include precious kinran brocades, some of which are now extremely rare. The white areas on the back and waist are formed by layering delicate tengujōshi Japanese paper, and the horn, finished with gold, employs the same technique used in painting horns and fangs on Noh masks. The eyes are finished with glossy black foil, creating a lifelike depth.
